DERMAL FILLERS

Wrinkles and drooping skin are the unwanted gifts of age. With aging comes the breakdown of collagen and elastin, the supporting tissues of skin, and in some there is a loss of facial fat. Wrinkles can be worsened by sun exposure, nicotine, and facial expressions (pursing the lips and furrowing the brow). The overall result is that the face loses elasticity and volume.

At Bay Area Laser Skin Care, we utilize dermal fillers that contain hyaluronic acid (e.g., Juvederm and Restylane). Hyaluronic acid is a substance which is naturally found in the body. These products are injected into the folds and creases to soften and smooth away the effects of age. This is a minimally invasive procedure with minimal downtime. Potential side effects of bruising or swelling are usually minor and short-lived.

FRACTIONAL RESURFACING: Treatment for Wrinkles, Scars, Stretchmarks

Natural healing occurs with fractional resurfacing. This therapy is used for wrinkles, stretchmarks, and scars of all types (acne scars, surgical or traumatic scars). Our Palomar laser is the only FDA-cleared laser for these conditions. With fractional resurfacing, the laser sends highly precise, closely-spaced micro-beams deep into the skin layers where collagen is produced.  This preserves normal, healthy skin between the laser spots resulting in more rapid healing,  while stimulating new collagen formation.

Quick Recovery
Fractional resurfacing (non-ablative) results in a short recovery time. Redness and swelling may occur for 2-3 days with minimal discomfort. No sedation is needed for the procedure and no pain medication is needed  following treatments.

Fractional Ablative vs. Non-ablative- What’s the difference?

Ablative procedures have a much longer period of recovery, often  require sedation for the procedure, and result in more discomfort following the procedure. There is an increased risk of infection and hyperpigmentation as a result of the ablative procedure.  For deep wrinkling, there  may be more dramatic improvement in a shorter period of time

How It Works
Wrinkles develop with aging due to the fact that less collagen is produced and the supporting  layer of skin becomes disorganized. Damage to the supporting layer occurs with an injury due to acne, surgery, trauma, or stretching.Laser energy stimulates the layers of tissue under the scars, wrinkles, or stretchmarks  and causes the cells (fibroblasts) to divide, forming new cells which produce new collagen. The word “collagen” comes from the Greek word meaning “glue producer”.  Collagen is a protein produced by fibroblasts and is the substance which gives skin its strength and elasticity. There are no skin care products which can improve the collagen layer like the laser can.  Small  improvements in scars may be seen using silicone gels or pads. Fine wrinkles are lessened with regular use of tretinoin (Retin-A) cream. New  stretchmarks may be improved with 6 months of tretinoin, but older ones do not improve with any topical treatments.

This is a conservative approach to skin care rejuvenation, which allows for a gradual improvement of the condition, thus  avoiding the appearance of a major reconstruction.  Treatments are  spaced at 3-4 week intervals. Some results can be seen early following treatments. The appearance continues  to improve over the 6 months  following  treatment as the natural process of new collagen formation occurs. This process is called “remodeling” which occurs with normal healing.
